Where to Stay in Gaborone

Towers in the CBD, resorts with pools, or a chalet beside a waterhole — here is how to choose.

Gaborone’s hotels are built for business travellers, which is good news for everyone else: standards are reliable, Wi-Fi works, and prices — typically €60 to €120 a night for a good double — are modest for a capital city. Weekends are often cheaper than weekdays.

The city is spread out, so location matters more than you might expect. The new CBD and the old centre around Main Mall put you near the monuments and restaurants; the resort hotels have space, pools and casinos but need a taxi to go anywhere; and for something different you can sleep inside Mokolodi Nature Reserve.

Booking tips

  • Check the conference calendar. Gaborone hosts SADC meetings and large conferences that can fill the main hotels midweek; book ahead if your dates are fixed.
  • Ask about airport shuttles. Many hotels run them on request, often free or for a small charge.
  • Weekends are a bargain. With business travellers gone, Friday-to-Sunday rates are frequently lower.
  • Around Christmas and New Year the city is very quiet; hotel restaurants may be the only ones open.
  • For Madikwe, remember that rates include meals and game drives, and that you need your passport and the right South African entry documents.
